The Medical Institute of Tamils (MIOT) continues its humanitarian and healthcare mission across Sri Lanka, bringing critical support to flood-affected families and restoring vision for patients in underserved communities.
Flood Relief Efforts in Batticaloa, Jaffna, and Badulla
MIOT members and supporters donated a total of £4,305 from 18 individuals, including five board members, to support urgent flood relief initiatives.
In partnership with the Eastern Regional Education and Economic Development Organisation (ERREDO), MIOT distributed 50 dry food packages to families in the Vahari DS Division, Batticaloa District, prioritising women-headed households and individuals with disabilities. Each package included essential items such as rice, dhal, wheat flour, dried fish, and soy meat.
Additional relief efforts were carried out in the Batticaloa Municipal District, where 100 dry ration packs were distributed at a total cost of Rs 30,000, ensuring continued access to food for vulnerable families.
MIOT has also donated £250 through the charity Green to support flood-affected coastal communities in Jaffna, with plans underway to extend assistance to families in the Badulla District.
Restoring Sight, Restoring Hope: Cataract Surgery Project
Last month, MIOT supported a life-changing cataract surgery outreach programme in Vavuniya and Mannar, led by Mr. M. Logendran FRCS, FRCOphth, in collaboration with local healthcare teams.
Cataracts remain one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in low-income regions, often due to limited access to timely medical care. Through this initiative, patients—many of whom had lived with severe visual impairment for years—received surgeries that restored not only their vision but also their independence and dignity.
Patients who were previously unable to recognise faces, read, or move safely without assistance experienced dramatic improvements within hours of surgery. The project also focused on building long-term local capacity by working closely with regional medical professionals.
Special thanks were extended to Dr. Kiritharan, Consultant Eye Surgeon in Vavuniya, and his team for their tireless dedication in delivering these procedures.
